All About Butters

All About Butters

Butters are rich, creamy, and decadent and make a great addition to your DIY bath and body projects. They can be used in body balms, moisturisers and lotions, lip balms, cold press soaps and much more. In general, butters are extremely skin loving and add a luxurious feeling to products.

Natural butters come from exotic plants and locations around the world. They are organic compounds containing carbon, hydrogen and oxygen and are similar in composition to carrier oils in that the carbon and hydrogen molecules from fatty acids link together with glycerine to create triglycerides. However each unique fatty acid profile determines the distinctive qualities and benefits of each butter.

Shea Butter

Shea Butter

Shea Butter is one of the most popular products, and for good reason. It makes skin feel moisturised and smooth. The butter is cold pressed from the seeds of the Shea-Karite Tree (or Shea Tree). The Shea Butter from Nood Mood is cold pressed using a traditional hand extraction method. It has then been refined to remove the odour, whilst retaining its properties. It is not melted down when it’s packaged, but carved straight from the block to avoid any unnecessary heating.

Shea Butter contains high levels of Oleic acid and Stearic acid and is rich in vitamins A and E. It penetrates the skin easily, resulting in a softer, plumper texture. It’s a fantastic moisturiser for dry and ageing skin and is commonly used for the treatment of various skin conditions such as dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema and blemishes. It can also be helpful in reducing the appearance of scars, hives, rashes, fine lines and wrinkles. Experiments show it also possesses anti-inflammatory properties.

Shea has a softer texture than cocoa and mango butter, but slightly firmer than avocado butter. It has a shelf life of about two years, and a melting point of about 28-34°C. The soft texture of Shea Butter makes it great for whipped body butters.

Cocoa Butter

Cocoa Butter

Cocoa butter is a pressed fat from the seeds, also known as Cacao Beans, of the Cocoa/Cacao Tree.  It has a firm texture and which can be used to help harden soap, lip balm, body butters, and more. Packed with antioxidants, essential fatty acids, vitamins E and K, stearic acid, palmitic acid and linoleic acid, Cocoa Butter is fantastic for many cosmetic formulations.

Cocoa Butter has nourishing, healing and moisturising properties which make it suitable for many applications including anti-wrinkle creams, soaps, hand creams, lip balms, lotions, moisturisers and in products that help reduce the appearance and formation of stretch marks.

Nood Mood offers Cocoa Butter which has been conveniently cast into pellet form to allow for ease of measurement and melting. The Cocoa Butter available through Nood Mood has been gently refined to remove colour and odour, leaving pure, yellowish solid quality butter with a slight cocoa odour.

The melting point is 30-32°C, and the shelf life is two years. At room temperature, cocoa butter is extremely hard and brittle - similar to wax. It melts very slightly on contact with skin.

Mango Butter

Mango Butter

Mango Butter has a firmer texture than Shea, but is softer than Cocoa. It melts on contact with the skin and disperses evenly.  It's extracted from the fruit kernels of the mango tree, and ours is refined and deodorised. Mango Butter is high in Omega 6 and C18:0 and C18:11 fatty acids. It has a melting point of 30°C, and a shelf life of two years.

Mango Butter is often used to soften, smooth and moisturise dry skin, treat burns, reduce scars and health other skin conditions. It forms a non-greasy barrier on the skin and if perfect for use in lipsticks, balms, baby products, hair conditioners, soap bars, creams and lotions.

The Mango Butter supplied by Nood Mood is a natural ingredient from seed that are grown organically in the wild. These are gathered by hand and cold expeller pressed to extract the butter. After careful filtration, the butter is then refined using organic clays and carbon to lighten the colour and odour for a product that meets the stringent requirements for cosmetic applications.

Avocado Butter

Avocado Butter

Avocado Butter is a Soft butter which works really well in balms and body butters. You can use it on its own, or add oils and wax to create your perfect texture.

The Avocado Butter we use is designed for topical use and is formulated with 100% pure, ultra-refined Avocado Oil for its fatty acid. Added non-GMO Soy Butter creates an odourless white base that is soft but rich and melts quickly on contact with the skin.

Common uses for Avocado Oil include hydrating dry, mature skin and hair. It is especially helpful for nails and cuticles and can be used to enhance the emollience of a variety of formulations including lotions, creams, after-sun products, conditions, body butters, luxury soaps, baby-care products and lip balms.
