Why check the pH of your skincare?
The pH of a water-containing formula can affect ingredient performance, preservative effectiveness and how comfortable the finished product feels on your skin. Checking it helps you assess whether your batch is within the range specified by your recipe and ingredient suppliers.
How to use
Take a small sample of your formulation using clean equipment. Follow the instructions supplied with the strips for testing and reading times, then compare the colour with the packaging chart. Use a fresh strip for each test and keep the container tightly closed, away from moisture.
Choosing the right testing method
These wide-range strips provide an approximate reading. Strongly coloured products and thick creams can make results difficult to interpret. For precise adjustments, or when checking a preservative’s required pH range, use a calibrated pH meter suitable for your formulation.
pH strips are not suitable for testing water-free products such as oils, balms and body butters. A pH reading alone does not confirm that a product is safely preserved.
